Spring into action with your collection of homemade shades that not only protect the planet, but also protect your pout. It’s a no brainer - the only choice is your colour... This recipe uses an ingredient from some of Spring’s busiest workers: bees. Many shop-bought lipsticks contain petroleum-based ingredients. This means that every light touch up of your lips is making your carbon footprint even heavier. Petroleumis also a resource that is running out. In contrast beeswax, a byproduct of honey production, is a gift that bees keep on giving and a way to keep them buzzing throughout the year.

Ingredients:
The base:
Beeswax (try your local craft store or order it online from Neal’s Yard Remedies)
Butter (shea, cocoa, almond or avocado)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil / Coconut Oil

The colours: Red: a drop of natural red food colouring or 1/8 teaspoon of beetroot powder
Burgundy: 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
Deep brown: 1/4 teaspoon of cocoa powder
Copper: 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric
These amounts are starting suggestions because a little colour goes a long way. How bold are you feeling?

Method:
1. Melt 1 teaspoon (or 5 ml) each of the beeswax, butter and oil. You can do this in a glass container over a pan of simmering (not boiling) water or by heating in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time (beeswax is flammable so don’t heat it directly in a pan).
2.Tweak the amount of the ingredients to make it more glossy or matt, depending on your preference. Once melted, stir to make sure they’re fully combined.
3.Remove from the heat and add your colour of choice. Try combining colours for the shade that’s just right for you.
4.Pour the lipstick into your container - try an old lipstick container, or make up jar. Basically, any container with a lid! Don’t fill itto the top, as the lipstick will expand as it cools.
5. Wait at least half an hour to cool before applying. Store in a cool place tokeep it hard and ready for wearing at a moments notice!
